Our beloved, crimson-coloured balls of goodness are in season now – yes that’s right, we’re talking about our Blood Oranges. These balls of beauty are sourced from local growers, Red Belly Citrus. Red Belly Citrus are a third generation venture, with grandparents Vito Leonardo and Domenica Mancini, along with Giuseppe and Lucia Barbagallo who emigrated from Italy and established Citrus farms in Griffith, NSW, Australia. It was in Griffith that their skills and knowledge were handed down to cousins and brothers Vito, Anthony and Leonard Mancini who established Redbelly Citrus in 2006.

Red Belly Citrus have invested in the latest in agricultural technologies and planting techniques to ensure top quality produce is created and delivered. The orchards and pack house are replete with the latest technologies to bring consumers the best blood orange in the most efficient and cost effective manner, including orchard temperature regulation technologies and the latest grading and packing machinery.

So, what’s all the fuss about with Blood Oranges you may ask?

Well, Blood Oranges are one of the most versatile citrus fruits currently available. Blood Oranges are an easy substitute to lemons and limes, offering that tangy, zesty flavour we all know and love. Italians from southern Italy are the ones credited for developing blood oranges from a humble piece of fruit to an icon of the Mediterranean lifestyle. The blood orange has been cultivated in Italy for centuries and current production levels still outmatch any producer in the world.

This crimson-red pigment that is highly sought-after in blood oranges comes from the fruits unique ability to produce Anthocyanins.  Anthocyanin, most commonly found in berries such as the blueberry, is one of the most powerful phyto-chemicals known in the plant kingdom.  This group phyto-chemical’s are known for their potent antioxidant capability, being some 150 times more powerful than Vitamin C alone. So, not only do blood oranges look stunningly vibrant and sweet, they are made up of strong, beneficial antioxidants.
